History In 1620, the first group of religious dissenters known as the pilgrims came on the Mayflower from England and the Netherlands and established the Plymouth Colony located in the Massachusetts area.
Before they arriving they established basic rules and laws that everyone must follow. These rules and laws were known as the Mayflower Compact. After reaching the land of Massachusetts the Pilgrims soon realized they did not |
have the skills necessary to survive for very long. The Indians who
had resided on the land for many years prior to their arrival, helped the
Pilgrims by teaching them to fish and grow corn. After arranging a peace
treaty with the Indians, the Pilgrims lived with them in harmony for many years and even established the holiday of Thanksgiving.
The Massachusetts Bay Colony had the largest group of settlers
and was officially established in 1630. "This group of Protestants
had been persecuted in England. The king of England sold
a corporation a piece of property. The corporation made a deal with the
persecuted group. They would go to Massachusetts Bay and establish a
colony. After seven years, they would own half the land and
houses. They were able to get out of England and made money." (http://www.answers.com/mt/massachusetts-bay-colony)
Researchers state that, "the Puritans arrived in the 1630 leaving England
because they were unable to change the church of England, by their name to
purify the church. The Puritans had very different religious beliefs
compared to the Pilgrims who were separatists from the Church of
England and their colonies were governed independent of each other
until Massachusetts Bay Colony was reorganized in 1691 combining both colonies as the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Prior to the formation of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, the Puritan leaders used the government to
enforce the strict religious rules that all pilgrims were expected to
follow." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/new-england-colonies)
